Introduction of STDU

Shijiazhuang Tiedao University (STDU) is a prestigious university of applied engineering. It excels in the fields of humanities, sciences, economics and management. STDU is under the supervision of central and local governments, mainly of Hebei Province. STDU was founded in 1950, originally named Shijiazhuang Railway Institute. It was one of the key railway engineering universities in Hebei Province as well as in the whole nation. In 2010, the university renamed as Shijiazhuang Tiedao University.

STDU has been enrolling students from all over the country who are qualified for first-batch enrollment based on their performance in the College Entrance Examination. Now it consists of 15 schools, 1 self-governed secondary college as well as 41 undergraduate majors, 28 postgraduate majors, 4 master degree majors, 5 provincial key disciplines, 5 fields to offer master of engineering degree and 1 cooperative PhD program in Highway and Railway Engineering. During the Master Education Evaluation of Hebei Province, all the disciplines were acclaimed to be in the excellent level. In 2009, STDU was selected as an intellectual construction station for cultivating future PhDs in engineering by the Academic Degree Commission of the State Council.

The university possesses 1442 faculty members: 160 professors, 376 associate professors, 276 postgraduate academic advisors, among whom there are 10 ??National Model Teachers?? and ??Teachers of Exemplary Moral Conduct??, 50 middle-aged experts who enjoy the Subsidy Award for Experts with Outstanding Contribution to Hebei Province issued by the State Council, 1 ??National Excellent Teacher Award?? recipient, 2 ??Provincial Excellent Teacher?? recipient, 1 former ??Cheung Kong Scholar??, 2 ??Yanzhao Scholars??, and 2 Candidate Members for the Chinese Academy of Sciences. STDU is equipped with 39 Experimental Laboratories Centers, which contain a large number of advanced equipment, both manufactured in the country and abroad which are worth RMB 155 million Yuan in total. The advanced library contains more than 1.3 million paper books, in addition to those there are 885 thousand well accessible electronic books. Moreover, the campus is fully covered with high-speed Internet service. Students are thus well connected to the world via the Internet.

STDU has already established 50 ??Excellent-Quality Courses?? at the stated or provincial level, in which there are two ??State Excellent-Quality Courses???? they are Tunnel Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The teaching staff of Engineering Automatic Design and Manufacture has been awarded the ??National Teaching Group?? title. Four majors, Civil Engineering, Mechanic Engineering, Engineering and Automation, Measurement Technology and Apparatus, have been selected by the Department of Education of Hebei Province as the ??Provincial Famous Brand Majors??, in which 4 majors were fondly referred to as the ??National Characterized Major??. Our ??New Engineering Bachelor Cultivation Mode Creative Laboratory?? was elected as the Talent Cultivation Creative Laboratory in Hebei Province. Furthermore, scholars in our 2 First-Level Disciplines, Civil Engineering and Transportation Engineering, were praised as Experts of ??Yan Zhao Scholars??. Most importantly, The Civil Engineering major was the first one in Hebei Province which has been successfully passed the evaluation of the State Ministry of Construction.

In the Evaluation of Undergraduate Education conducted by the Ministry of Education in 2006, STDU garnered the ??Excellent?? award. In the past 5 years, the university has also been crowned the ??National Teaching Award?? for 3 times, and ??Provincial Teaching Award?? for 15 times, with ??Research and Practice on Interdisciplinary Talents Cultivation Based on Individualized Teaching?? receiving the first prize in ??National Teaching Award??.

In the past five years, a large variety of more than 1000 projects have been undertaken by STDU faculty members, such as ??National 863 Project??,?? National Excellent Youth Science Fund?? project, ??National Natural Science Fund?? project, ??National social-Science Fund?? project and various other scientific research. In recognition of the university??s excellence in research, the state government granted STDU more than RMB 305 million Yuan in research support funds for future projects. Additionally, 67 national or provincial prizes have been awarded to our university, which included 1Speical Prize, 2 first prizes in the ??National Science and Technology Advancement Award??. Also, 15 students have been awarded ??Hope Star Prize of Mao Yisheng Sci-Tech Railway Education??. 96 brilliant engineering students in this university won the ??National Mathematical Modeling Competition?? with first, second and third prizes. In some majors, the percentage of students passing the postgraduate entrance exams is well above 40%.

The employment rate of our undergraduate students is above 96% in the past 22 years. For many times, STDU has been selected as provincial even national ??Excellent University of Graduates Employment.
