Annan calls for redoubled efforts to implement UN reforms

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Thursday urged world governments to redouble efforts to carry out the blueprint their leaders agreed upon last September to remake the United Nations.

"Of course, these crucial agreements will mean little without effective and timely implementation. That is why, if 2005 was a year of significant commitments, 2006 must one of visible results," said Annan.

He was speaking at a ceremony at the UN headquarters in New York to mark the handover of the chairmanship of the Group of 77, which groups some 135 developing countries and is the largest grouping within the UN.

World leaders agreed in September to set up a peacebuilding commission, upgrade the human rights commission into a council, complete the drafting of a comprehensive anti-terror convention and strengthen the UN's management, among other things.

So far, however, the only major tangible outcome achieved by the 191-nation UN General Assembly was the adoption of a resolution last month on the creation of the peacebuilding commission.

Annan urged the developing countries to redouble efforts for an early agreement on the human rights council and the UN Secretariat's management reform.

"A stronger, renewed United Nations, while important for all member states, remains most important to the people of the developing world," he stressed.
