Once Chinese traditional medicines are mentioned, Tongrentang is a household name both in China and all over the world. Surely, Tongrentang has created a splendid history over past 300 years.

The founder of Tongrentang was Le Xianyang, who originally came from Ningbo, Zhejiang Province and moved to Beijing during Yongle reign of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). His ancestors practiced medicine for three generations. He was influenced by what he constantly saw and heard in his childhood and studied lots of books on prescription and preparation, he was dedicated to manufacture of prescription drugs. The bolus he made was effective with real materials and fine process. He considered drug business to help others and maintain living as his ultimate pursuit. He said, "For maintaining living and helping the world, the most important thing is medicine. Mr. Le founded Tongrentang Drugstore in 1669.

The raw materials and processes at Tongrentang were strictly chosen. According to widely accepted recipes, literature citation, family secret recipes and royal court doctors' effective prescription, the drugstore intensively chose and composed, repeatedly investigated, adjusted based on patients feedback to make drugs perfect. It also published Tong Rentang Drug List. Tongrentang provided imperial medicines for royal families since the sixth year of Yongzheng reign of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and experienced eight emperors for 188 years.

Tongrentang experienced ups and downs over its several generations, and became a state-owned enterprise in 1954. All kinds of Chinese medicine products from Tongrentang win a worldwide praise: unique prescription, first-class materials, professional process and apparent effects.
