Table manners diverge from country to country. In China, table manners are generally simple, but as foreigners, you need to be informed of some details so as to show your respect to a different culture as well as to your host. Your Chinese teachers might have told you not to play with the chopsticks during dinner, but that's far from enough. To show your good breeding, it is essential to learn Chinese table manners comprehensively. And learning Chinese is inseparable from learning Chinese culture.
Firstly, during Chinese dinner, dishes are served one by one. When a new dish is served, the host will ask the guests to have a taste first. Keep it in mind that don't take too much food from the plate at one time no matter how much you like it. And while having a meal, don't stir the dishes in plates for it is considered rather rude.
Secondly, don't leave your seat easily during meal unless you have something urgent to do. If you really need to, express your regret to the host and get back as soon as possible. Otherwise, other people will have to wait for you. While having meal, don't make any noise, especially when you are having soup. If a dish is out of your reach, do not stand up and try to reach it, you can wait for the host to take it to you.
Thirdly, tea is a necessity during dinner in China, the people closest to the teapot is responsible for adding tea for everyone. While serving tea, serve the senior ones first, and serve yourself last. Picking teeth is considered rude, if you need to, .cover your mouth with a napkin before doing so.
