Learn Chinese Alcohol Culture

If you are learning Chinese culture, you cannot miss Chinese酒(jiǔ) culture. In Chinese lessons 酒(jiǔ) your Chinese teachers may translate it into "wine"or "alcohol", it is alcoholic beverages directly produced by the fermentation of various non-grape substances, or fortified alcoholic beverages, for instance, grains, legumes, fruits, or sometimes other types of ingredients.

China is among the top ten global markets for wine consumption. As long as you dine with Chinese people, you will find that wine is indispensable on tables, without which a formal dinner cannot be held. Chinese wine has a history of over 5000 years in China. It is traditionally served in a small ceramic bottle, and is then poured into small cups when passed to people. It is a rule to drink it up at one go once you lift your cup. Moreover, it is a tradition to drink wine with food rather than on its own, though the latter is not uncommon.

Chinese people have always celebrated important occasions with wine. They will invite their close friends to a drinking session when someone moves in a new house, marries, starts a new business, even when their children get in a good school. In ancient times, soldiers would celebrate by drinking wine after winning a battle. If a warrior fell in a battle, his fellows would scatter alcohol on the ground as part of a memorial ceremony. A common phrased exchanged would be, "If we are good friends, then bottoms up; if not, then just take a sip". If you are drinking with Chinese people, keep it in mind that they prefer unrestrained drinkers.
