To learn mandarin, you need to keep it in mind almost all words have more than one meaning. For instance, in Chinese“方便”(fāng biàn) means convenience as a noun, but as a verb, it means to answer the call of nature. Once there was an American who knows a little Chinese came to China to meet his Chinese friends. During dinner, a Chinese friend said: “I'm sorry, but I would like to方便(answer the call of nature) now. The American didn’t understand and asked what “方便” was, and he was told that “方便” was to “go to the toilet”. After dinner, the Chinese said: “I hope you can provide “方便”(some convenience) to us when we go to the US.” The American wondered: “Why does he ask me to provide toilet when he comes to the US?”

After dinner, another Chinese said to the foreigner: “I would like to invite you to dinner at any time that is 方便（convenient） to you.” The foreigner was speechless because he thought that he would be invited to have dinner while answering the call of nature. Knowing the two different meanings of “方便”, you will not be confused the next time you hear “咱找个你我都方便的时候一起吃饭吧 (let’s have dinner together when it is convenient to both of us) ” .
