The Fading Dialects

To learn mandarin online seems to be unnecessary for most of the Chinese people. As a post 80s, I learn mandarin mainly by watching TV because my childhood is without PCs or iPads. It is a pity that I neglected spoken mandarin while learning Chinese in the early years. When preparing for the National Mandarin Test, I turned to the computer for help and took advantage of the Internet to correct my pronunciation, and finally I made great progress. To speak perfect standard mandarin, I struggled to overcome the influence of my dialect.

However, children in China nowadays are inclined to speak only mandarin for they spend most of the time at school with teachers who are required to speak mandarin. For the children, it is an ideal way of learning Chinese mandarin, which serves as the perfect tool for them to interact with each other.

Nevertheless, some scholars are concerned about the vanishing dialects in China. They contend that the extinction of dialects will lead to the decline of Chinese culture, like operas. Moreover, for the immigrants, dialects are like roots that remind them of their origins, which are of paramount value. In a word, only by retaining the dialects can the students study Chinese well. Dialects reflect the ancient Chinese wisdom, which is an aspect of Chinese culture.
