A Brief Introduction to Guilin Medical University

 
Located in the historical and tourist city of Guilin which is world well-known for its unique beauty of hills and rivers, Guilin Medical University (GLMU) is an undergraduate university directly under the administration of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It is made up of 3 campuses-----Le Qun, Dong Cheng and Lingui campus. Le Qun campus is near the Solitary Beauty Peak rising sharply from the ground, Dong Cheng campus lies in the east bank of the colorful Li River and Lingui campus is located in the new district of Guilin. The total area covers 889517.78 m2.
 
Founded in 1935 from the former Guilin Senior Nurse Midwifery School, GLMU was upgraded and renamed as Guilin Medical School in 1958. Approved by the former State Education Committee in 1987, the school was upgraded to a college for medical undergraduates. In 2006, GLMU was authorized to conduct the graduate education and was evaluated and accredited an “Excellent University” by the Ministry of Education of China. In a word, Guilin Medical University gives priority to clinical medicine and also integrates pharmacy, biotechnology, medical assay as well as nursing into a multi-major harmoniously-developed university with stronger comprehensive power to run a university and also with a definite influence in and out of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
 
The university has a sound-diversified and highly-qualified team of teachers. There are 709 professional teachers, of whom, 448 have high professional titles and 412 have Master’s degrees or above.
 
This university has 12 dependent colleges (faculties), including College of Basic Medicine, College of Clinical Medicine, College of Clinical Medicine at Nanxi Shan,the Second College of Clinical Medicine, the Third College of Clinical Medicine, College of Pharmacy, College of Biotechnology, College of Nursing, College of Continuing Education, College of International Education, School of Graduate Study, School of Public Health, together with 5 teaching departments including Department of Medical Laboratory, Department of Oral Medicine, Department of Foreign Languages and Department of Physical Education, etc.. Additionally, there is one immediate affiliated hospital, 4 non-immediate affiliated hospitals,22 teaching hospitals and 88 teaching and practice bases.
 
At present, the university has 2 full-time specialties of postgraduate level, including Clinical Medicine and Basic Medicine. It has 9 full-time specialties of undergraduate level, including Clinical Medicine, Medical Laboratory, Oral Medicine, Preventive Medicine, Nursing, Biotechnology, Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Preparation, and Marketing (medical-orientated); Besides, it also provides adults with 6 specialties in vocational education, covering Medical Imaging, Clinical Laboratory, Nursing, Pharmacy, Medical Marketing and Medical Biotechnology. Also, there are 3 levels of corresponding education programs for adult, 3-year program, undergraduate program (bachelor degree of medicine) for high school graduates, and undergraduate program for the associates, whose specialties cover Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Clinical Laboratory, Stomatology, etc.. We have enrolled students from 21 provinces and regions in China. At present, the number of students of various kinds in our university has reached over 19,200.   
 
GLMU takes an active part in the international exchanges and cooperations, and it is one of the earlier institutions of higher learning being accredited by the former State Education Committee and the State Administration Bureau of Traditional Chinese Medicine to enroll international students and offer education of traditional Chinese medicine to oversea students. Currently, we have foreign students from USA, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Vietnam and so on.
 
After more than seventy years of construction and development, the scale of the university has consistently been enhanced and elevated with each passing year. In turn, the university is getting stronger and at the same time, the teaching quality is being improved steadily. Furthermore, the university has been cultivating increasing numbers of practical medical talents. Over the recent three years, the proportion of undergraduate students taking up a medical-related occupation has retained over 93 %, making positive contributions to the medical care and to the health service of Guangxi, the country and the world as well. Definitely, the fame and reputation of the university is being increased year after year. Therefore, the university is becoming more widely accepted by the society, and it gradually paves its own unique way to run a medical university at the accepted standards.
