The Academic Ranking of World Universities-2009 Was Released

At the 3rd International Conference on World-Class Universities (WCU-3) held from 2 to 4 November, the Center for World-Class Universities of Graduate School of Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University formally released the 2009 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU 2009). The rankings identify the leading 500 universities around the world, including 18 universities in Mainland China.

Universities in Europe and America are fully reinforced

As indicated in 2009 Academic Ranking of World Universities, universities in Europe and America have occupied the prominent positions in the ranking. Among the Top 10 universities, 8 are in the U.S. with Harvard University having been No. One for seven times consecutively since the first release year of the ranking. The No. 2 and the No. 3 universities separately are Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley. Among the Top 10 universities, only 2 universities are from countries other than U. S. They are Cambridge University which is No. 4 and Oxford University which ranks the 10th.The first 100 universities in 2009 Academic Ranking of World Universities are listed with specific placings while the rest universities are listed with interval placings. In the ranking list, none of Universities in Mainland China is included in the leading 200. Peking University, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, University of Science and Technology of China, and Nanjing University altogether six are listed in the interval of No. 201~300, 2 universities in No. 301~400, 10 universities in No. 401~500. There are altogether 18 universities in Mainland China included in the leading 500 and all of them are aided financially by “985 Project”. However in 2003 the first year of releasing, only 8 universities in Mainland China were included in the leading 500 universities.
