China to Establish West Lake Cultural Heritage Monitoring Center

China will establish a cultural heritage monitoring and management center to further protect West Lake after it was listed as a world heritage last month, a local official said.

West Lake, located in the west of Hangzhou, capital city of Zhejiang Province, is a popular tourist attraction due to its natural beauty and cultural value.

It was placed on the World Heritage List at the 35th session of UNESCO's World Heritage Committee in Paris.

The center aims to transform West Lake into an exceptionally clean, beautiful, civilized, ordered and safe world heritage resort through the use of high-tech tools and campaigns to protect the environment and public facilities, said Liu Ying, director of West Lake Scenic Area Management Committee.

Illegal buildings will be torn down immediately, and the center will collect information about the scale and height of all the buildings around the lake to ensure they meet the world cultural heritage standard.

Congestion caused by the influx of tourists to West Lake is another problem. The center will cooperate with travel agencies so as to better manage tourist flows at the most popular scenic spots around the lake.

Moreover, a complaints mechanism will be set up to improve the quality of services there.
