The Summer Solstice

The Summer Solstice(10th solar term)


It is one of the twenty four solar terms, and is always on 21th or 22th June. From this day, the daytime will be longer and the night will be shorter. After this time, in most parts of China, the temperature is some high and the sunshine is sufficient, leading to the fast growing of the crops.

The Eating Traditions


1. Beijing

In Beijing, people would like to eat cold noodles with lettuce at this day. As the weather is so hot, eating cold noodles helps to promote appetite. So in this time, the noodles shops in Beijing are very busy.


2. Shaoxing

In the ancient time, people in shaoxing often sacrifice to their ancestors by burning incense. And because of weather, they always hold the dragon boat race at this time instead of the dragon noat festival.


3. Wuxi

At this time, people in the wuxi like to eat oatmeal as breakfast and wonton as lunch, making the sense of harmony in chinese. 


4. Mohe

The mohe county is the most high latitude county in China. Because of its high latitude, it often has aurora borealis in the summer. And this time stays about 9 days around the summer solstice, thus attracting millions of people here.

The Healthy Food


Bitter gourd is the best food in the summer solstice. It belongs to cucurbitaceae and has high nutritive value and medicinal value. And it has numerous nutrition, such as protein, fat, kalium, sodium, phosphorus, carotene, niacin and so on. The juice has something like quinine, which helps to cure the lymphatic sarcoma and leukemia. It is also called the ''FAT KILLER", which means that it can help reduce the height.
